The minister presents the guiding principles for future cooperation between Japan and the UK.

In spite of geographical distance, the UK-Japan relationship continues to deepen. Both countries continue to be champions of the free and open international order based on the rule of law and are global forces for the promotion and realization of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. 

Taking advantage of the G7 Hiroshima Summit this year, Japan and the UK have taken the opportunity to further strengthen their global strategic partnership through the new Hiroshima Accord.

Despite the strengths, there are many challenges ahead that will test the strength of the relationship. Russian’s aggression against Ukraine, strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific, climate change, and global trade are just some of the multitude of issues that require a strong, collaborative dialogue and action between Tokyo and London in the years to come.

With this in mind, Chatham House welcomes the foreign minister of Japan Yoshimasa Hayashi who is scheduled to present the guiding principles for future cooperation between Japan and the UK.

Minister Hayashi will travel to London to deliver the speech in person if circumstances permit.

This event discusses key questions including:

• What are the missions of Japan and the UK in the current strategic environment?
• What specific cooperation will be undertaken on the basis of the Hiroshima Accord and what is the philosophy that flows through such cooperation?
• How are Japan and the UK able to address the fracturing rules-based global order?

As with all member events, questions from the audience drive the conversation.
