How can a long and durable peace be found to safeguard Ukraine and Europe’s future?

Ever since the possibility of Ukrainian victory could be entertained following the retreat of Russian forces from the Kyiv region in March 2022, the question of how the peace will be achieved has been up in the air. Definitions of success have ranged from the full restoration of pre-2014 Ukrainian territory, to calls for compromise and concession by Ukraine.

As Western democracies are entering new election cycles, a long-term plan is needed for ending the war, and what is to follow. Failure to do so will compromise the broader security framework in Europe and will result in further conflicts in the future.

In this event, we will discuss the conditions that need to be met to ensure that Ukraine is whole, free, and independent, that the Russian state is no longer a threat to neighbouring countries. We will also dispel the common misconceptions about how the war’s end might look. 

The panel of experts will discuss the following questions:

• What can we do to ensure that the Russian state poses no threat to territorial integrity of neighbouring countries in the future?
• Should Ukraine stay neutral? How does Ukraine ascension to and association with Western organizations affect any future relationship with Russia?
• How will military outcomes on the battlefield affect outcomes at the negotiating table?
• Could Russia’s war in Ukraine end at the negotiating table?
• How should the West deal with Russia’s war crimes?

As with all member events, questions from the audience drive the conversation.
