Since the election of President William Ruto in 2022, Kenya has increasingly sought to assert itself on the global stage while continuing to balance a range of competing international partners. In 2023 alone Kenya has signed a new trade deal with the EU; hosted visits to Nairobi by the German chancellor, Russian foreign minister and King Charles as the new head of the Commonwealth respectively; and has continued negotiations with the US over a new trade pact, with President Ruto also visiting Beijing in October.

On the multilateral stage, Kenya has been an outspoken voice on global debt issues and environmental inequalities, including hosting the African Climate Summit in August 2023, and has committed to leading a multinational police intervention in Haiti. It also stands as a pivotal voice within a turbulent regional situation in the Horn and eastern Africa, symbolized by its successful push for the recent admissions of Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the East African Community (EAC).

At this event, H.E. Musalia Mudavadi EGH, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs, will discuss Kenya’s positioning in a rapidly changing regional and international context, and will reflect on the significance of foreign engagements for addressing domestic policy challenges.
